Obituary: Cynthia Deanne Hood of Terlingua

Throughout her too-brief life, Cynthia Deanne Hood, remained determined to live life her way. And she did.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday May 17, 2017 the beautiful, creative and loving Cynthia Hood died in the Big Bend Regional Medical Center as a result of cancer, a disease she successfully fought to overcome for more than five years.

Cynthia Hood, born in San Antonio on July 18, 1968, had a life-long love for dance and the arts. She studied dance in New York City before graduating with honors in Latin American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She was awarded two Fulbright Scholarships to continue her studies in Costa Rica.

Always a prodigy with foreign languages, she briefly ran her own Hood Translation Services business before returning to college for additional studies.

She fell in love with the Big Bend area more than 20 years ago. She was a beloved teacher in the Terlingua schools before achieving master-level training in yoga and opening her own yoga and dance studio on her land outside of Terlingua.

As well as her enduring passion for dance and music, she also was a champion of the environment, equality and efforts to make the world a better place, which she accomplished as attested by her multitude of friends and admirers.

Her greatest passion, however, was for her daughter, Luna Marie Barrett.

Her family members, who loved her deeply for many years and foresaw a long life of ever greater accomplishments especially mourn the loss of their cherished relation.

Among others, Cynthia Hood is survived by her daughter, Luna; her mother, Barbara Hood; her brother, David Hood; her sister-in-law, Vickie Hood; a nephew and niece, Andrew and Rachel Hood; her former husband, Jason Barrett; and her birth parents, Rowland Nethaway and Sherry Nethaway.

A memorial will be held in Cynthia’s honor on Saturday, June 3 at the Starlight Theater from noon until 3 PM. Please bring a dish to share and join in fellowship to celebrate and remember Cynthia.
