The National Park Service issue this statement today: FIRE UPDATE: there is a 40 acre (estimated) wildland fire burning south of Sotol Vista. The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive has been closed at Homer Wilson Ranch and the Lower Burro Mesa Pouroff. Visitors can still access Castolon and Santa Elena Canyon via the Old Maverick Road, and can expect to see smoke in western areas of the park. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to maintain public safety during this wildland fire.
Earlier today a retired national park ranger told the Gazette he could see the fire last night from his home in Terlingua using binoculars.
