Winter Storm Warning in effect through Noon January 2

VERY COLD AIR WILL CONTINUE TO COMBINE WITH FREEZING
RAIN...SLEET...FREEZING DRIZZLE...SNOW...AND FREEZING FOG
RESULTING IN THE GRADUAL ACCUMULATION OF ICE...WHICH WILL CONTINUE
TO PRODUCE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. A WINTER STORM
WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR MOST AREAS THROUGH THIS EVENING. WIND
CHILL READINGS NEAR SUNRISE WILL IN THE SINGLE DIGITS IN MANY
AREAS OF THE BASIN...WITH BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS ACROSS THE
NORTHERN PERMIAN BASIN AS WELL AS SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO.

A NORTHEAST WIND OF 35 TO 45 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 70 MPH CAN EXPECTED
THROUGH LATE THIS MORNING AFFECTING THE GUADALUPE PASS. A HIGH WIND
WARNING IS IN EFFECT. TRAVELERS SHOULD AVOID TRAVELING U.S. 62/180
THROUGH THE GUADALUPE PASS AS THE COMBINATION OF HIGH WINDS AND
WINTRY PRECIPITATION ALONG WITH LOW VISIBILITIES WILL MAKE ROADS
VERY DIFFICULT TO NAVIGATE.

A WINTRY MIX MAY REDEVELOP ACROSS THE SOUTHERN BASIN AND LOWER
TRANS PECOS...AND EVEN ALONG OR NEAR THE RIO GRANDE EARLY THURSDAY
MORNING. A WINTRY MIX WILL STILL BE POSSIBLE INTO FRIDAY MORNING
AS THE UPPER SYSTEM FINALLY NEARS THE AREA. STAY TUNED FOR THE

.IN THE WAKE OF AN ARCTIC FRONT THAT MOVED THROUGH THIS MORNING LIGHT
FREEZING RAIN HAS DEVELOPED AND WILL PERSIST INTO WEDNESDAY
AFTERNOON. TEMPERATURES HAVE FALLEN BELOW FREEZING...AND WILL REMAIN
THERE THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. IT IS EXPECTED THAT
ROADWAYS...BRIDGES...OVERPASSES...SIDEWALKS... AND STAIRWAYS WILL
ACCUMULATE ICE. THE WINTRY PRECIPITATION IS IS EXPECTED TO BE
LIGHT WITH ICE ACCUMULATIONS UP TO 0.20 INCHES POSSIBLE. WITH THE
EXPECTED FREEZING RAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS WILL BECOME EXTREMELY
HAZARDOUS...ESPECIALLY DURING THE UPCOMING HOLIDAY. FREEZING FOG
WILL ALSO REDUCE VISIBILITIES ALONG THE EAST SLOPES OF THE
MOUNTAINS. ADDITIONALLY...ELEVATED WINDS AND VERY COLD
TEMPERATURES WILL LEAD TO VERY COLD WIND CHILLS TONIGHT AND
WEDNESDAY. READINGS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS
SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO AND THE PERMIAN BASIN AND MAY FALL AS LOW AS
5 BELOW ZERO TONIGHT IN THE GUADALUPE MOUNTAINS.

RESIDENTS THAT ARE PLANNING TRAVEL SHOULD CHECK THE LATEST
WEATHER FORECAST BEFORE TRAVELING. WINTER WEATHER WILL BE
POSSIBLE IN SURROUNDING AREAS TOO.
A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. TRAVEL IS LIKELY TO BE SEVERELY IMPACTED.
