About Us

lizard, TerlinguaThe Big Bend Gazette is an independently-owned monthly news publication focused on the Big Bend of far West Texas, a vast and varied region of desert, mountains, and iconoclasts where the United States and Mexico meet at the Rio Grande. We feature unusual news stories, excellent writing, provocative cartoons, and intriguing photographs of the people and things who inhabit this land.

In September 2003, John Waters and Marlys Hersey acquired The Marathon Gazette (established in 2000), changed its name and expanded its focus, and moved its base from Marathon to Terlingua, Texas, just outside of Big Bend National Park. We are now based in Alpine.
